Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

Is dúshlán ar leith do mhic léinn le Gaeilge, ar cainteoirí dara teanga iad a bhformhór, agus ar beag a dteagmháil le réimeanna éagsúla na teanga, an réim acadúil a láimhseáil. Is é cuspóir an mhodúil feasacht na mac léinn ar an réim acadúil i nGaeilge a ardú agus scileanna léinn agus scileanna teanga na mac léinn a fhorbairt ionas go mbeidh siad in ann taighde agus scríbhneoireacht acadúil a láimhseáil i nGaeilge. Beidh an modúl ar fáil neamhspleách ar an sainchúrsa Dioplóma sa Ghaeilge Fheidhmeach chomh maith. De bhreis ar mhic léinn an Dioplóma, díreofar sa mhodúl ar riachtanais spriocphobail éagsúil: mic léinn le Gaeilge in Ollscoil Luimnigh agus in institiúidí tríú leibhéal eile, mic léinn i mbun cúrsaí eile ar mian leo togra taighde (m.sh. tionscadal na bliana deireanaí in Ollscoil Luimnigh) nó cuid de thogra taighde a chur i gcrích trí Ghaeilge, daoine gairmiúla a chaithfidh aghaidh a thabhairt ar thaighde agus scríbhneoireacht acadúil i nGaeilge. [Translation for internal use only] Engaging effectively with academic register in Irish can be particularly challenging for students, most of whom are second language speakers and often with little exposure to various registers of the language. The aim of this module is to increase students' ability to carry out academic research and writing in Irish by increasing their awareness of academic register in Irish and by developing their academic and language skills. The module will be advertised independently of the Dioplóma sa Ghaeilge Fheidhmeach (Sainchuspóir) and will be of interest to other groups such as students of Irish in the University of Limerick and other third level institutions, students who wish to carry out some or all of their research projects (e.g. their final year project) through Irish, professionals involved in research or academic writing through Irish.

[Translation for internal use only] On successful completion of this module, the students will be able to: identify the characteristics of academic writing and perform an analysis of representative Irish language academic texts; draft an appropriate research question for their own area of study/work as well as a coherent outline for the ensuing academic text; source relevant academic references and analyse their appropriateness for use in a literature review; accurately reference a wide range of literature sources within an Irish language academic text as well as create a reference list; demonstate an understanding of syntax and grammatical accuracy in editorial exercises; and

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: Demonstrate awareness of academic integrity by making every effort to avoid plagiarism and a respect for the work of other authors.

Freastalóidh an modúil seo ar riachtanas Ollscoil Luimnigh scríbhneoirí éifeachtacha a fhorbairt i ngach ábhar léinn. Bíodh is go n-aithnítear nach céad teanga aon mhic léinn an teanga acadúil, tuigtear gur dúshlán sa bhreis iad na constaicí ar leith a bhíonn ag mic léinn agus iad ag dul i dtaithí ar an nGaeilge acadúil (Ní Uigín 2013). Iarracht dul i ngleic go straitéiseach leis na deacrachtaí a bhíonn ag mic léinn leis an litearthacht acadúil i nGaeilge is ea an cúrsa seo. Múinfear an modúl trí shraith ceardlann idirghníomhach, sa seomra ranga agus ar líne, ina spreagfar na mic léinn le dianmhachnamh criticiúil a dhéanamh ar an bpróiseas scríbhneoireachta agus le straitéisí níos éifeachtaí a ghlacadh chucu féin. This module corresponds with the University of Limerick's aim of producing effective writers in all areas of study. Though no student is a native speaker of academic register, Irish academic language presents particular challenges to students (Ní Uigín 2013). This module will strategically address the needs of students acquiring academic literacy in Irish. Through a series of interactive workshops, delivered in the classroom and online, students will be encouraged to critically reflect on the writing process and develop effective writing strategies. Transferable skills such as critical thinking, project management, sourcing information, effective communication and collaboration will be emphasised. Collaborating with support services such as the library and the Regional Writing Centre will lead to the development of online support materials in Irish, such as workshops on using the library, videos with lecturers regarding their experience of assessing essays, etc. This module will be available as a standalone module also. Consideration will be given to the adaptation of face-to-face T&L activities for delivery by distance at materials design stage also.
